Inflation?

10 07 2008

Where are we headed? it’s a very scary thought to see inflation go this high.. and with oil prices and gold going up we will only see inflation go higher.

Refer to my previous post about oil which was commented on by Skunk:

“these oil prices arent even good for opec countries as it is the oil price itself which is the cause of the record inflation that even opec countries are suffering from. while alot of the world’s money is coming here, alot is also going out to import stuff into this region cos nothing is made here.

so rents are higher cos it costs more money to bring in materials to build new buildings, food is higher cos of transport costs, fertiliser costs, packaging costs, etc.”

Seriously, money lately isn’t worth as much as it was worth few years back.. I still remember being able to survive a weekend on 4 or 5 KD when I was younger. now if you are lucky and you don’t spend much you will be throwing out no less than 30 or 40 KD (on a good weekend) without even buying something that you will keep.

What scares me even more that investing your money is harder now (obviously).. couple of months ago I wanted to open a fixed deposit.. and the rate they offered was 2.75% per annum for the monthly deposit! that means you are actually loosing money on your deposit..

What would your saving plan be in such a scenario? share..

UPDATE: a friend just sent me this picture.. it’s true regarding inflation

Most Expensive Qur’an

2 07 2008

I came across an interesting most-expensive item today.. The Holly Qu’ran! this Qu’ran was sold in an auction on behalf of the Hispanic Society of America for over $2,300,000. this Qur’an is dated to 1203 CE.

Whats remarkable about this copy of the Holly Qur’an is the golden and silver writing of it. supposedly this is the oldest complete gold written Qur’an on earth now.

Legal Documents

26 05 2008

Where do I start? have you had the pleasure of reading a legal document? those things suck!! it’s like teaching a kid not to do something.. and make sure u tell him that himself, his friends, his cousins, his second cousins, and his nanny shouldn’t do it!

they repeat things over and over again!! I wonder why the legal system didnt stay the way Hamurrabi made it.. things were simple back then! you kill, you get killed.. and so on!

and please don’t tell me because it’s important.. i know that and i’m more than sure it’s important, it’s just pain in the ass to read and be able to stay focused when you are reading!

to understand what i’m talking about.. read this sample shareholder’s agreement

ENJOY !!

April Fools’ Day

1 04 2008

How i hate that day! its nerve wrecking if u ask me. And i always end up being the fool somehow (Which worsens the day if that’s possible).

Since i know nothing about April Fools’ day reasons of existance or it’s origin, i thought about looking it up, and here’s one of the best reasons ive found :

April Fools’ Day or All Fools’ Day, though not a holiday in its own right, is a notable day celebrated in many countries on April 1. The day is marked by the commission of hoaxes and other practical jokes of varying sophistication on friends, enemies and neighbors, or sending them on fools’ errands, the aim of which is to embarrass the gullible.

The origins of this custom are complex and a matter of much debate. It is likely a relic of the once common festivities held on the vernal equinox, which began on the 25th of March, old New Year’s Day, and ended on the 2nd of April.

Though the 1st of April appears to have been observed as a general festival in Great Britain in antiquity, it was apparently not until the beginning of the 18th century that the making of April-fools was a common custom. In Scotland the custom was known as “hunting the gowk,” i.e. the cuckoo, and April-fools were “April-gowks,” the cuckoo being a term of contempt, as it is in many countries.

Europe may have derived its April-fooling from the French. French and Dutch references from 1508 and 1539 respectively describe April Fools’ Day jokes and the custom of making them on the first of April. France was one of the first nations to make January 1 officially New Year’s Day (which was already celebrated by many). Thus the New Year’s gifts and visits of felicitation which had been the feature of the 1st of April became associated with the first day of January, and those who disliked or did not hear about the change were fair game for those wits who amused themselves by sending mock presents and paying calls of pretended ceremony on the 1st of April. In France the person fooled is known as poisson d’avril (April fish). This has been explained as arising from the fact that in April the sun quits the zodiacal sign of the fish. The French traditionally celebrated this holiday by placing dead fish on the backs of friends. Today, real fish have been replaced with sticky, fish-shaped paper cut-outs that children try to sneak onto the back of their friends’ shirts. Candy shops and bakeries also offer fish-shaped sweets for the holiday.

Some Dutch also celebrate the 1st of April for other reasons.”

I think i prefer being called poisson d’avril rather than a fool, it has a bit of charm to it :P

Beware people, u dont know who might be placing dead fish on your backs ;D

The metro ticket..

22 10 2007

I figured I haven’t been driving for the past 2 months which is alot btw so I went and got my self a ticket just by riding the damn metro!

22102007.jpg

Here is what happened.. the race finished yesterday and i’m obviously very very happy because Kimi won the 2007 Formula 1 Championship so we went to have dinner and after that I took the metro back to my apartment. as soon as we got off the metro they had a check point! even here in Holland they have it !! so the guy looks at my monthly pass and it was expired (for some reason I though my pass expires on the 27th) .. so I had to pay 37.7 euros ticket for a monthly pass that only costs 33 euros and I have to go get another one which i’m not looking forward to standing in line for this stupid pass.

Lesson: metro pass expires!

100 & 777

19 03 2007

Their will be a new number for the fire fighters & recuse emergencies which is 100. the reason behind moving these cases from 777 is to reduce the load on the operations room of 777 and to assure a faster response.
